Cathar’tic break in the Pays d’Aude

Beautiful few days based in Carcassonne and touring a few of the ancient Cathar castles in the Pyrenees foothills and what was then the border with Spain.

I thoroughly recommend the Hotel de la Cite inside the ancient city walls of Carcassonne. Rebuilt at the start of the last century and surrounded by buildings that inspired Walt Disney to describe the fairytale castle in his adaptation of Cinderella, it is easy to see why this is a popular destination. Surrounding Cathar castles are in varying stages of ruin with many sitting on hill-tops and were only recently reclaimed as places to visit after several hundred years of neglect.
